Adopt-a-School launched

Racine Quarry and local school forge rock-solid partnership

December 15, 2006 - Vulcan Materials Company's Racine Quarry announced their partnership with St. Rita Elementary School as part of their Adopt-a-School program during an assembly in front of the school's 260 students.

Don Lindner, Vulcan's Racine plant manager, presented St. Rita Elementary School's schoolchildren with a $3,000 grant to provide educational materials and safety equipment.

"We are proud to support the students of St. Rita Elementary School," Lindner said. "As a socially responsible employer, we're committed to helping improve the quality of life in our communities."

The school has already determined that the grant will be used toward Earth Science educational materials and the construction of a safety fence surrounding the school.

"We are excited about the opportunities this partnership with Vulcan will provide for our students," said St. Rita Elementary School Principal Diana Lesnjak. "We are grateful for Vulcan's generosity."

The new partnership builds on Vulcan's history of reaching out to neighbors, schools, community organizations and local officials surrounding the quarry. The company sponsors the Racine Wings and Wheels event, the Caledonia Historical Society, and recently partnered with St. Rita Elementary School and the Caledonia Police Department on a Halloween safety program.

"We are very fortunate to be working with Vulcan," Lesnjak said. "The students and staff at St. Rita Elementary School are fortunate to have the support of the parents and community members. The funding and backing that is provided enables the students to access the learning tools, enrichment experiences and materials that are necessary to support a rigorous curriculum."

Lindner said the collaboration promises to only yield a tighter bond between the quarry and the school.

"We are proud to do anything to help the students of St. Rita Elementary School," Lindner said. "This new partnership is a great way for us to expand our involvement in your community by helping our local schoolchildren."

The Vulcan Materials Company Foundation was established in 1988 to assist in carrying out the company's mission of being a good corporate citizen in the communities where Vulcan has facilities. The Foundation's objective is to help build stronger communities by working with schools, supporting environmental education and encouraging employee involvement. Activities include involvement in adopt-a-school programs, funding scholarships, and establishing and maintaining certified wildlife habitats.
