Facility honored for beautification and improvement initiatives.

January 9, 2007 - Vulcan Materials Company announced its Racine Quarry has been recognized as a national leader in facility improvements, receiving the 2006 National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) About Face Showplace Award. The national honor recognizes the highest level of achievement in beautification and improvement throughout the quarry, including entrance and approach, office and scale house, employee areas, screening areas, facility structures, operations area, dust, erosion and scrap control, trucks and reclamation.

"As a socially responsible employer, we continue to raise the bar of excellence at all of our facilities," said Rob Vogel, Vulcan's Midwest Division President. "I congratulate the Racine team for their dedication and commitment to their operation, local community and neighbors."

Improvements cited include enhanced berming along Three Mile Road and Charles Street, a refurbished office and scale house, landscaping, an acceleration lane, perimeter fencing and gates.

"Our entire team has done an incredible job with all of our upgrades," said Racine Quarry Plant Manager Don Lindner. "But our job isn't over. Maintaining our facility is a daily responsibility all of us here share. We're also committed to being as responsive as possible to the needs of the community."

For example, based on community feedback, Lindner recently installed a new, state-of-the-art high-powered wheel wash to help improve dust track out control. This new equipment adds to the street sweeper, water truck and various dust controls on equipment the quarry deploys to minimize dust.

The About Face Award is one example of the Racine Quarry's commitment to the community. For example, Lindner and his team have hosted community open house events, formed a Community Advisory Group, established an Adopt-A-School partnership with St. Rita Elementary School, sponsored Racine Wings N' Wheels and the Caledonia Historical Society and partnered with local law enforcement for a Halloween safety program. They have also created www.vmcRacine.com to help improve communication with the community.

Created in 1975, About Face is a nationally acclaimed program that recognizes and rewards aggregate producers who have made constructive and positive efforts to enhance the appearance of their quarrying operations. Since the award program's inception, Vulcan Materials Midwest Division facilities have earned 19 About Face Showplace Awards. In 1987, About Face received a Special Merit Award from the private sector-sponsored Keep America Beautiful Program, and in 1990 it received the highest honor in the U. S. Department of Interior's Take Pride in America Program.
